Rain rain rain and mud, mud, mud…. Winterpast Farm petting zoo in Wake Forest NC will be closed today.Here are a few of our pigs (PETUNIA and DAISY) and some of the goats (MOLLY with son MAX and daughter CATY) hanging out together in the driest pen. A volunteer family built the really nice no-sag roof for this pen so it is always nice and dry.
Farmer Mary spends alot of time on rainy days like today running outside every few hours to get all the accumulated rain off the tarps of many animal pens. The whole pen will implode if too much heavy rain accumulates. That has happened in the snow as well. One day all pens will have nice sturdy roofs!

TURKEY LURKEY hatched out four babies yesterday. These in the photo are brand new with the front right one still attached to the egg. Baby turkeys are called “poults”. She is a Narragansett breed. Her husband is
a Blue Slate. Looks like the babies are a nice mix. Hope to have more hatch.
This morning do you see some of the babies peeking out by her tail?
Yesterday after we moved the mom
and nest to a bigger safe pen. Babies are fluffed up. One silver one looks like the Blue Slate dad.

Baby chicks are hatching right now at Winterpast Farm petting zoo in Wake Forest NC! Lucky farm visitors who arrived after the big rain got to see and hold the brand new babies. Look closely and you will see the “egg tooth” which is a sharp point adhered to the top end of the beak which allows the chick to peck its way out of the egg. This falls off around day 3.
We have moved mom and remaining eggs to a safe pen where farm visitors can easily view the new babies.

It is truly hard to remember when BARNEY didn’t live at Winterpast Farm. At age 16+ he is still going strong after moving to the farm about a year ago. His original elderly person had died suddenly and not very nice plans were being made for his future when Farmer Mary was asked to take him in. Farmer Mary was used to having Great Danes and Border Collies but she said yes. Turns out he is the man Farmer Mary had been praying for and so much more. Farm visitors love BARNEY who serves as meeter and greeter at Winterpast Farm. Come meet him soon.
