An old pic of Farmer Mary she just found from 2011 really shows the size of an emu egg. The eggs came after Christmas this year so we didn’t get a santa hat photo. Every year is a little different in regards to laying time and seems to be very much affected by weather.

Farmer Mary has been doing some research and has found out that chickens eating acorns can turn the yolk of their eggs an olive green that tastes odd. Several of her egg buying customers reported lately that an egg or two were “bad” which was very surprising since the eggs are usually sold within a day or two of laying. One friend who Farmer Mary had given eggs to said two had really dark olive green yolks.
Farmer Mary loves the internet for researching farm issues! Winterpast Farm had an unusually heavy load of acorns and the goats and pigs and some young deer ate them up, but they must have left enough little bits on the ground for a few of the chickens to eat. Farmer Mary is hoping the yolks return to normal now that the acorns are gone. If you had an odd yolk please come get a replacement egg!
Clay ornaments shown are handmade by Farmer Mary and sold at Winterpast Farm to help pay for feeding all the former pets now living at the farm.

Emu footprint in the rain. We will probably be closed today if this rain keeps up. If you planned to visit today be sure to check in by texting Farmer Mary 919-244-1800. She doesn’t mind getting wet but the big animals will all be hiding in the barn and all the bunny pens are covered up with tarps. It is much nicer to sit on a dry bench holding a dry bunny than to sit on a wet bench holding a damp bunny!
