This week Farmer Mary’s youngest son, Thomas, a Freshman at NCSU, is participating in “Shack-a-Thon”. This fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity happens every year on campus. Clubs and groups from different majors build a tiny house on the Brickyard in front of the D. H. Hill Library. They commit to build it in one day, staff it 24 hours a day for a week, then dismantle it in a day, donating all materials to Habitat.
They also raise funds to help Habitat construct a single home. Thomas’s group from IMPACT Leadership Village has partnered with the Engineering Village. Their shack has a Game Of Thrones theme so has a handmade throne inside. The throne was recently constructed by a team of students at Winterpast Farm from an Adirondack chair and t-posts and scrap lumber and bamboo.
All this week you can go see several dozen individual shacks. Each shack will be selling something. The shack that raises the most funds wins the Best Shack award. Farmer Mary’s son’s shack will be fundraising by selling chances to sit for a photo in the throne, and, not surprisingly, chances to hold bunnies and walk a baby goat on a leash.
Farmer Mary and her animals will be there again tomorrow from around 1-6 and Thursday from 6-9pm. Bring a few dollars and tour the tiny homes and maybe try out the great icecream made from ncstate cows that is sold on campus.
