🐢More and more turtles are coming out of winter hibernation at the Pond at Winterpast Farm Petting Zoo in Wake Forest NC. 🐢❓Did you know that Farmer Mary has upcycled her inground pool into a sanctuary and forever home for former pet turtles and fish? Yesterday farm visitors spied 7 turtles out basking in the sunshine ☀️. Spring is on the way!
BTW: As a turtle’s shell (bones) grows larger, the old scutes (the outer portion of the shell) fall off to make way for the newer, larger scutes. This shows as thin layers peeling off like the turtle to the left.
🐢A turtle will shed much more often right after emerging from hibernation, when it will bask quite often to dry out its skin and shell.
