These small ducks that farm visitors often assume are babies are actually mature Call ducks. Hunters used to use these small loud ducks to “call” in wild ducks. These days hunters use plastic devices that mimic wild ducks and Call ducks tend to be pets since they are small and cute. Farmer Mary has some extra Call ducks available right now for $10 each at Winterpast Farm petting zoo in Wake Forest NC. In the photo you will see a dark striped female Mallard duck to the right with a beautiful blue stripe on her wing. She was donated to Winterpast Farm and decided to mother all the Call ducks. They will miss her when she flies off this Fall!
The ducks like frozen peas, corn, while wheat crackers and cereal, grapes and kale if you want to bring them a snack next time you visit Winterpast Farm.
