Emu are really nice and will eat out of your hand…at Winterpast Farm petting zoo in Wake Forest NC. Farmer Mary has a pair of emu named OSCAR and EMILY who were donated many years ago from another zoo that had too many.
Recently a stray emu came to live at Winterpast Farm. Farmer Mary had fun amazing the animal control officers with her quick netting of the big bird when she was invited to try to catch it. It is still unclear whether the new emu is male or female.
This winter it will either lay eggs or perhaps set on a nest of eggs. Maybe Farmer Mary finally has a male who will set on eggs the entire 8 weeks while losing up to a third of his body weight. Time will tell!
Emu live in Australia and they belong to a family of flightless birds called ratites. Emu are the second largest bird in the world after the tall Ostrich. They can run 30 mph and can jump 7 feet straight up!
The emu at Winterpast Farm are happy to eat kale, apple slices, grapes, carrots, cereal and more from your hands. They are the only birds with double feathers.
Come meet a nice emu soon at Winterpast Farm!
